What you will learn

This course is perfect for professionals working at height (tower climbers, rope access techs, rescue teams, arborists, etc.), recreational users participating in vertical sports (i.e. climbers, cavers, canyoneers, etc.), persons and/or positions tasked with the responsibility of PPE examination (i.e. self-employed workers, health and safety managers, instructors, supervisors, team leaders and trainers.), companies/organizations performing third-party PPE examination services, Petzl Technical Partners or Petzl Information Partners. The course structure is comprised of a theory component and examination and a visual demonstration of items being put through drop tests!

These skills help encompass a safer way to work at height that meets regulation.

Topics include:

Risk assessment and associated decision making.
Potential hazards associated with the use of PPE for protection against falls from height.
Legislation and current requirements regarding the management of PPE.
Definition of “competent person.”
General principles and uses of PPE.
Employer and PPE inspector responsibilities.
Understanding a technical notice.
Principal actions of the examiner: maintenance, returns under warranty, removal of products from service, etc.

Principal corrective actions: information to provide for the users and/or their management system.
Necessary tools and work environment to efficiently perform PPE examination.
Presentation of Petzl Technical Institute PPE examination protocol.
Pre-use checks, special inspections, thorough examinations, signs and symptoms, significance of any defects, criteria for removal from service.
Identify defects and damage which would result in the item being removed from service.
Inspection reporting.

IRATA Training

IRATA (Industrial Rope Access Trade Association) is based in the UK and it's Rope Access certification is internationally recognized. IRATA training consists of three levels of certification and we offer all three every month in BC and AB. Whether you are new to IRATA training, need a refresher, looking to upgrade, or need to recertify, our in-depth IRATA training program and instructors will equip you with safer and more efficient ways to do rope access on site.

SPRAT Training

SPRAT (Society of Professional Rope Access Technicians) is based in America and aims to promote the safe use of Rope Access within our regulatory bodies here in North America. SPRAT training also consists of three levels of certification, which we host every month in BC only. Our methods of teaching aim to lay out the basics as clearly as possible; while inspiring you to problem solve and to be as efficient as possible. Team collaboration is essential for successful Rope Access technicians and we embody that nature within our Rope Access training.

Tower Climbing and Rescue

Our Tower and Climbing Rescue program comes in two parts, Climber 1 and Climber 2. Both are in line and approved by STAC (The Structure, Tower and Antenna Council). This course is meant for technicians who have to climb and work on telecommunication towers. Custom and on-site training is available for this course.

Gain competency in the thorough examination of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). This Petzl course is perfect for individuals who are responsible for equipment and work at height PPE inspections. But, we encourage all technicians to take this course to gain a better understanding of equipment inspection, which ultimately prevents equipment failure on site.

Custom Work At Height Training

We understand that sometimes you need training for a specific work site or structure. Understanding the rescue procedures, protocols, and equipment for a particular job is important and you may not have someone qualified in-house to run this program. Our training team has helped many companies in this scenario with our custom rescue training. These programs can be completed at our facilities or on site.

FAQ

Do we have to come to your facility or can you come to ours?

We can bring our Petzl PPE Competent program to your facility as long as you have a suitable classroom and learning area. The only thing missing from our off-site courses are the drop tests and visual demonstrations. Contact us to find out more.

How long is the course?

The course is 3 days long. It will involve a theory component and practical examination that you need to pass.

How much is the course?

The course is $995 plus GST. Prices subject to change.

When will the certification expire?

You will need to re-do this course every 3 years to keep it valid.

Once my employee gets their level 1, can they do rope access on their own?

Once your employee passes their level 1, they will need to work under a L3 rope access supervisor. This requirement is explained in the IRATA and SPRAT regulations, which is reference by provincial regulation in BC and Alberta. But, regulation aside, a level 1 rope tech can maneuver themselves on a rope access system but they do not have the experience or training to be able to perform advance rescues and rigging. Therefore a L3 Supervisor is required on site to manage the overall safety of the rope access work. If you do not have a L3 Supervisor staff member, we can help you hire one through our job postings. I want to start using rope access more in my company, how do I start?

Building internal rope access capability does not have to be complicated. Although there are many details to think about, there are five major areas that you need to consider. IRATA and SPRAT regulation are the guiding documents you need to refer to when putting these five components in place. We also have a Rope Access Management Program that you can utilize to start putting all the pieces in place.

This was my 4th school in my 3rd country doing IRATA training. I had Josh as a trainer and very much liked his approach and teaching technique. 3 years is actually a long time between courses, so pretty much everyone doing a re-cert was pretty rusty. Josh was patient and explains each manoeuvre clearly and thoroughly and is very knowledgable with any questions you can throw his way. I have had trainers in the past that can be very intimidating and use the classic 'you should know this!'. We don't all do crazy monkey rescues on a daily basis so forgetting a few details along the way is only natural. Hence the need to re cert every 3 years. It wasn't like that at all with Josh. If I am still in BC when I need my next IRATA recert, I will be more than happy to come back to Pacific Ropes.
